WAITAKI HIGH SCHOOLS

MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD Mr J. Kirkness was in the chair at the monthly meeting of the Waitaki High School Board on Thursday afternoon and there were also present Mrs W. Berry, Messrs J. Rodman, C. E. Ridgen, W. M. Cooper, Miss J. B. Wilson (principal ot the Waitaki Girls’ High‘School), and Mr J. T. Burrows (rector of the Waitaki Boys’ High School). The acceptance of the estimate of £353 by the Oamaru Builders for extensions at Orbell House, Waitaki Girls’ High School, was approved. The Education Department advised that the Public Works Department had granted £4Ol 2s to enable the tennis courts and certain other works to be completed at the Boys’ School. The Otago Education Board advised that Mr W. M. Cooper had been appointed as its representative for a further year. Appointments to the Boys’ staff were approved as follows:—Mr J. F. Moffatt, M.Sc.. Grade V position; Mr K. C. McDonald, care*ers adviser. ‘ Leave of absence was granted to Miss I. M. Pollard (three months). Positions of responsibility at the Girls’ School were approved as follows: —Miss J Ballard, M.A., head of English department; Miss I. M. Cruickshank, science department. Mr Burrows reported that the school roll stood at 621, of wljom 495 were in the senior school and 136 in the junior school. Mr Jackson (manager of Ford Motors, Wellington), had forwarded a case of motor parts for use in the motor engineering room. A silver cup for cricket had been presented by Mr E. H. Laing (Christchurch), to be awarded annually to the pupil in the first eleven with the highest batting average. Prospective cricket matches were as follows: —Waitaki v. Timarw, at Waitaki, March 19 and 20; v. Christchurch, at Christchurch, March 25 and 26. Boys leaving school at the end of 1946 numbered 1«0. Advice had been received that B. Robertson, who was placed in the credit list for the national scholarship examination in 1946, has been awarded a national boarding bursary. G. S. McNaughton, who was also placed on the credit list, had been awarded a science bursary. , _ _ , The Otago Education Board wrote regarding the service of the attendance officer and asked the board to reconsider its previous decision not to avail itself of the services of the officer. —The letter was received, and it was agreed that no action be taken. Mrs Berry was appointed to represent the board on the diamond jubilee of the School Committee. Miss Wilson reported that 128 pupils left the school at the end of 1946. Two tennis teams would visit Waimate on Tuesday. The championship sports events would be held on Tuesday and the tabloid events on March 26. The need for larger accommodation in the school was urgent. In the senior.,department there were 383 pupils, and the accommodation was satisfactory, ..for, only 225 to 250., The glassrooms were. , too Small, and' locker and luncheon roonis' were . required. Stair rooms for the mistresses were also required. Miss Wilson was asked to draw up a full report on these matters. The report also, recommended additions and improvements to the school grounds in the vicinity of Orbell House, and Mr Steenson (the board’s architect) was asked to prepare a plan and submit it to the Education Department. The secretary reported that 164 pupils had enrolled for instruction at the Technical School.
