NEW INDUSTRIES

CONDITIONS OF COMPETITION FURTHER INFORMATION REQUIRED The chairman, Mr A. R. Tait, reported to the Progress League on Wednesday night that the judges of the new industries competition had met but had been unable to come to a decision, and had referred the matter back to the league for a direction. Mr C. F. Jones explained that the judges found difficulty concerning the conditions of the competition—whether the awards should go to the competitors with the best suggestions or for something concrete for the production of articles in competition with outside maiiutyctmers. The judges agreed that the league's decision would be the basis for making the awards. Another difficulty had arisen through competitors marshalling facts and figures, but most of the judges were not qualified to say whether these (acts and figures were correct or not, as in the case of a chemical formula. Some of the entrants had submitted six proposals, and the judges wanted to know whether they should deal with only one suggestion, or all six suggestions as a whole. Mr Tait said they wanted something of value to the district that could be carried on as a new industry, not a mere suggestion. After further discussion it was decided to request entrants to furnish details and information to the satisfaction of the judges, the competition to be confined to the present entrants only.
