DOMINION TOURNAMENT (PA.) < ' TAURANGA, Aug. 28- *; The opening day’s play in’the Dominion basketball tournament, which began at Tauranga to-day, was marked by some keen contests. The feature of the afternoon’s games was the en- 1 counter in the First Grade between Canterbury and Auckland; which Auckland won by 22 goals to 17. The’ tournament began in fine weather and before a large crowd. The results of the day’s play are as follows: First Grade j, Morning games.—Manawatu lli Hawke’s Bay 9; Auckland 18, Otago' 4; Southland 11, Wanganui 8: Afternoon games.—Otago 13, Wellington 7; Auckland 22, Canterbury 17. Second Grade Morning games.—Southland Minor 11, Ashburton 4; Horowhenua 16, Waikato 15; Taranaki 20, Rotorua-Bay of Plenty 16; Hutt Valley 16, Poverty Bay 13 Afternoon games.—Ashburton 14, Waikato 13; Matamata 18, Horowhenua 9; Hutt Valley 9, Rotorua-Bay of Plenty 7; Poverty Bay 12, Southland .. Minor 12; Horowhenua 12, Ashburton 10; Waikato 23, Taranaki 16.
