THE CHEAPER WAY

PAYMENT OF SUBSIDIES/ (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 28. The hope that payment of subsidies to keep prices down would continue was expressed by Mr-: H.:, E* Combs (Govt., Wellington Suburbs) speaking in the financial debate in the Hou& of Representatives to-night. He said that the wheat subsidy in 1942-43 was £583,000, but if there had - been none and a penny a pound was added to the price of bread the cost to the community would have been £2,225,000 to £2,500,000. Subsidies were also paid to gas companies to keep down the price of gas. The subsidy for 1942-43 was £27,000 but if threepence per 1000 feet had been added f to the price of gas it would have cost the public £IOO,OOO. Opposition members: It won’t cost you much in subsidy this year. There is not enough gas. J ? ,
