RICH IN BATSMEN

M.C.C. TOURING TEAM BOWLING STRENGTH DOUBTED LONDON, Aug. 11. The M.C.C. announced that invitations for the remaining places completing the team for Australia had been issued to Fishlock, Edrich, and James Langridge, The Press Association, commenting on the selection of the three men, points out that the average age of the 17 players for the Australian tour ; is 33, which is much higher than usual. No young top-class players have developed owing to the hiatus in big cricket since 1939. The selectors are relying on skill and experience. The oldest players are Hammond (43), Langridge (40), and Fichlock (39). The youngest are Evans (25) and Ikin and Bedser (28).

Langridge during the season has taken 75 wickets for an average of 33 and scored 1194 runs, an average of 33. Fishlock has no superior as a lefthand batsman. Edrich’s selection is bound to cause controversy because of his many failures batting against Australia in 1938, but he is now playing much better.

As a combination the team is exceedingly rich in batsmen, but a little lean in first-rate all-rounders/ and bowlers.

England’s team for the final test against India at the Oval on August 17, 19, and 20 is: Hammond (captain), Voce, Fishlock, Edrich, Hutton, Washbrook, Wright, Compton A. V. Bedser, T. P. Smith, and Evans, with Ikin as twelfth man.
