FATE OF MILLIONS

DEPENDENT ON CONFERENCE WORLD-WIDE FOOD CONTROL (N.Z.P.A. Special Corespondent) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 12. New Zealand will be represented at the conference of the Food and Agri-w cultural Organisation assembling in Copenhagen on October 2 by Mr E. J. Fawcett, Director-general of Agriculture; Mr F. Taylor, chief dairy inspector; and Mr N. S. McClumpha. of the New Zealand Marketing Department. Raising Living Standards The.communique which launched the Food and Agricultural Organisation in 1943 was signed by 44 nations, and stated that there must be an expansion of the whole world economy to provide purchasing power sufficient to maintain an adequate diet for all. Under Sir Boyd John Orr, the organisation has prepared a case for international action without further delay, and the case will be presented at Copenhagen. Sir John will propose the establishment of a World Food Board, which can be constituted as a new international agency. Alternatively, it can be established by the Food and Agricultural Organisation. The board would have powers and funds to enable it to stabilise the prices of agricultural commodities on the .world markets, establish a world food reserve adequate to deal with failure of crops in any country, and dispose of surplus agricultural products on special terms to countries where the need for them is most urgent. It would work closely with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the proposed International Trade Organisation.

Life or Death Problem Commenting on the forthcoming conference, the Daily Herald says:. “Millions will be granted a healthy life—or millions will be sentenced to death.”
