RACIAL ANTIPATHY

OUTBURST IN ALABAMA MANY NEGROES INJURED NEW YORK, Aug. 11. Nine persons, eight of whom are of the ’teen age, are in gaol in Athens, Alabama, charged with unlawful assembly as the result of race rioting yesterday. The county judge said the youngest of the accused, aged 13, carried a club, and knocked down negroes. He revealed that a crowd of more than 2000 forced the Mayor to release two white soldiers from gaol and then, excited by hoodlums, the mob began to clear the streets of negroes. The town is now quite safe, but State guardsmen remain on the alert. Athens is a farming centre, with a population of about 6000, 25 per cent, of whom are negroes. An earlier message said that a fight between two white ex-soldiers and a negro touched off race rioting in Athens, Alabamba, in which between 50 and 100 negroes were injured, reports the Associated Press. A witness said old and crippled negroes were among the many knocked down and trampled by white mobs, which were estimated to total 2000 men' at one stage, Negroes were chased off the streets, and about 10 whites were arrested.
