WOMEN’S HOCKEY

MANIOTOTO BEATS NORTH OTAGO Playing a superior style of hockey in all departments of the game, Maniototo outclassed North Otago B by 10 goals to 1 in the women’s representative hockey match played at Orana Park on Saturday. Combination, backlng-up and finish were three merits on which the visitors won their game, and the forward line, more so in the first spell, had little opposition in breaking through North Otago's defence. An excellent performance, however was given by the North Otago goalkeeper (Mrs Kennedy), who saved as many gv als as were scored. J. Howard in the halves wtih P. Gordon made numerout attempts to get their forwards in action and were usually sound on defence. North Otago’s forwards were inclined to play too far back and consequently a great deal of ground had to be covered before any attack could be made into Maniototo’s territory. M. and F Foster staged some good openings, but neither was backed up by the remainder of the forward line. Maniototo’s defence was not called upon very often, most of the clearing shots being executed by the halves. The fullbacks, W. Keegan and O; Blakely, were hard to pass, and the halves, especially Mrs Patched (centre) and F. Provan (right) gave their forwards a feast oi the bail. The whole forward line functioned with a good understanding, and the centre forward (D. Keegan) and inside right (J. Gibson) combined well. The wings (A. Foster and H. Stringer) were sound, but were inclined to be caught offside when on attack. _ . Scorers for Maniototo were H. Stringer (3), J .Gibson (3), D. Keegan (2), A. Foster and D. Mitchell. B. Foster secured North Otago’s goal. Rev. G. M. Yuill and Mr A. C. Taylor were the umpires.
