EARTHQUAKE TOLL

DEATH AND DESTRUCTION RUMOURS CAUSE PANIC CIUDAD TRUJILLO, (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) . Aug. 10. Widespread panic and an acute food shortage are reported from the northern provinces of the Dominican Republic, where continuing earthquakes and tidal waves have killed at least 73 Sle. In addition, more severe earthes and tremors have been felt in most parts of the republic at about five-minute intervals ever since last Sunday’s initial shocks. The north coastal towns have been entirely abandoned. A severe shake yesterday is known to have injured at least 130 persons in the Cabrera Bohio area. Two new shocks of moderate intensity caused fresh anxiety in the northern provinces, where false rumours of impending new earthquakes and tidal waves demoralised the inhabitants, says the Associated Press correspondent at Ciudad Trujillo. The rumours grew to such an extent that the Government threatened punishment for those spreading them. More than 80 people have already been prosecuted. The tidal waves are believed to have been caused by violent earthquakes on the bottom of the Atlantic. They created widespread terror and destruction in the towns of Matanzas and Puerto Plata. Huge waves crushed dwellings instantly. The Government has organised special relief and rescue services.
