RADIO NEWS SERVICE

VALUE OPEN TO QUESTION OPPOSITION IN AUSTRALIA (Rec. 7 p.m.) CANBERRA, Aug. 10. The Australian Broadcasting Commission News Services Bill, which provides that the commission shall set up an independent news service, passed through all stages in the House of Representatives. During the debate the Leader of the Opposition, Mr R. G. Menzies, said the Government was forcing the. proposed service on the commission. An independent news service could not be better than the present one. it would be worse. He declared that an expensive news service was completely unjustified. Unless the Government could prove unfairness in the selection of cable news, it had no case for an independent service. There was no evidence of incompetency among Australia's present news gatherers overseas.
