AIR VOYAGE STOLEN
SMALL JAVANESE BOY PAINFUL INJURIES RECEIVED \ (Rec. 10.30 p.m.) DARWIN, Aug. 8. A Javanese boy, aged 12, who stowed away in the engine nacelle of a Douglas Dakota transport plane owned by the Dutch, travelled from Koepang to Darwin in three hours. He is now in quarantine in Darwin Hospital, where he is being treated for multiple burns, exposure and shock.
His presence was discovered late last night by a mechanic at Darwin, who saw the boy in an unconscious condition twined about the undercarriage lowering mechanism within the naceile. After regaining consciousness the boy said he had come from Koepang. R.A.A.F. officers are astonished that anyone could have lived at 9000 feet in the blast of air while the plane travelled at 150 miles an hour. The cavity is considered to be completely filled when the wheels are up. The biggest mystery is why the unconscious boy did not fall out when the wheels were lowered over Darwin. He is small and slightly built, and was wearing only a shirt and shorts.
