FINDS SYDNEY QUAINT
STOWAWAY FROM DOMINION (Rec. 10 p.m.) SYDNEY, Aug. 8. The stowaway from New Zealand, David Reece, was permitted to land from the freighter Catspaw to-day, and was taken to the New Zealand Government Offices, where a decision will be made whether he will be permitted to remain in Australia or will be repatriated to New Zealand. He has been allowed freedom by the Australian immigration authorities. “A quaint place, Sydney.” he commented, as he came ashore. “ Reminds me of a puppet village.” He has an American accent which he says he picked up from American troops in New Zealand. Reece’s family reside in Auckland.
David Reece arrived in Sydney handcuffed to a bunk in the motor ship Catspaw. He was kept in custody aboard ship until the Customs Department received verification of his identity from Auckland. Reece said that he was a cook in the Royal Arcade Hotel. Wellington, and had been drinking with a member of the crew the night before the Catspaw sailed. He had no intention of stowing away, but if allowed to go ashore would seek a job in Sydney.
