NIGHT SPENT IN TENT
(Rec. 10.30 p.m.) SYDNEY. July 9. When the three families, numbering 12 persons, were evicted from the Housing Commission homes in the suburb of Granville last night, they refused to leave the footpath or attempt to return to the Housing Commission’s emergency settlement. A neighbour provided a large American Army tent, which was erected on an unmade footpath outside the houses. In this the families, which included seven children, spent the night. One woman, who is pregnant, collapsed and was taken to hospital, but returned to the tent this afternoon. The men deny that the “ squatting ” attempt was the work of Communists.
