PREFABRICATED HOMES

CONTRACT TO BE LET (Rec. 0.5 a.m.) MELBOURNE, July 9. The Victorian State Government has begun negotiations with the Commonwealth for the prefabrication of 11,500 steel homes to cost £16,000,000. The contract will be the largest ever let in Australia. The Victorian Housing Commission estimates that the cost of the land, homes, fencing, and sewerage will be about £1,370.000. The tooling of the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation’s plant at Fishermen's Bend for the job will take about six months, but within 18 months a weekly output of 100 homes is expected. The contract will provide for the 11,500 homes to be completed within three years.
