CENTENARY AND GREEN ISLAND
Sir,—Having read your report of the discussion by the Green Island Council on the above subject, I am urged to make the following comment. While I am personally not in favour of parochialism as against nationalism, I must support Cr Dickinson in so far as his remarks regarding a community centre for Green Island are concerned. I think I am safe in saying that Green Island is probably the largest populated borough between Dunedin and Gore, yet it has very little more in the way of public amenities than a village of, say, the size of Henley. A community centre comprising rest rooms, Plunket rooms, public library, children’s library medical clinic, social hall, etc., is urgently needed. The time for this is long overdue, not inopportune as suggested by our worthy mayor Cr McAhan favours the museum pro-, posal. While this certainly has its good points. I am not unforgetful of a memorial tpaid for by public money) situated on top, of Signal Hill, and benefitting possibly 5 per cent of the community. A swimming pool and many other things are urgently needed in the borough, and it is to be hoped that our mayor and members of the council -will adopt a progressive policy and work to secure the amenities so urgently needed before spending money outside the district. —I am, etc., Abbotsford, July 3. A. C. Dumble.
