Sir,—l was astonished’ to read the article in this morning’s Times concerning ’’ pace off the wicket." I should have thought that every schoolboy, or at least everyone with any cricket . experience, would know that pace off the wicket is one of the most important factors in bowling. Overspin is essential for a good slow bowler; it contributes to swerve; and it gives " fire ” to a fast bowler. But only those born with the requisite fingeis can produce it. It would have been too bad if the learned professors had given a negative verdict. There are more things in cricket than professors dream of.—l am, etc.. Umpire. July 3. [H. D.
