CAVERSHAM CLUB REUNION
The Caversham Harrier and Amateur Athletic Club held a welcome home reunion on Saturday night, when over 70 past and present members attended. Among the guests were Mr W. Rackley. who joined the club at its formation in 1905, Messrs J. D. Beatson and F. J. Frew, who joined in 1907, and Mr J McLauchlan U 908). The president. Mr H. T. Emmerson, read the names of 14 members who had made the supreme sacrifice in the Second World War, and their memory was hqnoured in silence. Proposing the toast of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, Mr C. K. Heaton paid a tribute to the centre’s work in organising th ln S repdy, the president of the centre, Mr C. W. Clark, spoke of the Caversham Club and the first decade, when its runners built up a great record of success. Mr Clark said that the present secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, Mr W. J. Holley, had received his introduction to the sport in the club Mr Clark concluded by thanking a number of Caversham officials who had assisted him on the Otago Centre. The toast to the returned servicemen was proposed by Mr G. L. Austin, who emphasised the spirit of companionship which the cross-country sport developed among its members, and unrged the returned men to resume their athletic activity Mr W. Darling responded for the army, Mr L. Hebbard for the air force, and Mr L. K. Donovan for the navy. Mr E. P. Brown proposed the toast ot • The Sister Clubs.” Messrs W. N. Connell (Dunedin), S. Airey (Celtic United), A L. Fagg (North Otago), S. F. Corbett (Toko), and L. Smith responding. Mr L F. Gerrie proposed the toast of ’ The Old Members,” to which Messrs W. Rackley, j. D. Beatosn, F. J. Frew, and J McLauchlan replied. , _ Items were contributed by Messrs R. Cain (humorous recitation), D. Ipgns (song), and J. Haleis (humorous sketch), and community dinging was enjoyed Mr I Kinraid was the accompanist.
