TALCUM POWDER

PREVENTION OF INFECTION . OFFICIAL STATEMENT SOUGHT (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 5. An inquiry as to what steps had been taken by the Health Department to ensure, as far as possible, that tragedies such as the recent deaths of a number of babies from tetanus attributed to the use of talcum powder did not occur again, was contained in notice of a question by Mr R. M. Algie (Oppn., Remuera) in the House of Representatives to-day.

He asked the Minister of Health, Mr A. H. Nordmeyer, whether the use of the term “ dusting powder ” in recent discussions applied to baby powder only, whether the department considered that the element of danger was eliminated if sterilisation was made to be dependent upon the reaction to a bacteriological test alone, and whether there was any statutory duty which rested upon the manufacturers in such cases and w'hich department had the power to enforce it.
