NOTES FROM RICCARTON

AL SIRAT BEING SPELLED (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, July 5. The conditions at Riccarton are very much improved. The rain ceased yesterday afternoon and the weather was fine this morning. The No. 9 grass was available, and though it was heavy, horses engaged at Washdyke were able to do some useful work. Later in the day there were more showers of rain. Horses figuring in more than one of the galloping events at Washdyke are Taxpayer, hurdles and steeplechase, and Denary and Kyron, Claremont and Kingdown Hack Handicaps.

There are two brackets at the South Canterbury meeting—Scotch Tweed and The Crofter in the Claremont Hack Handicap and Lottie Jinks and Rose o’ Day in the Opihi Trot. After a disappointing race at Ashburton, Pink Gown was sent back to her North Canterbury owner, who has placed her with J. Mitchell at Waimate. Royal Vestments, who has also left Riccarton, has joined the team of E. J. Burns at Washdyke. Having sent Rout home for a spell, R. Register has taken Racket in hand again. She showed stamina when formerly in work, and she will be prepared for the New Zealand Cup. The three-year-old, A 1 Sirat, who won the Derby this season, has been gelded. He is now having a spell, but R. Wilson hopes to have him ready to race again about October. Notary, in J. C. Tomkinson’s team, has been going freely in his work lately, and while he remains sound he must always be kept in mind for his races, as he has plenty of speed. The Coronach filly, Princess Anne, has had a change of quarters. She has been subject to periods of unsoundr ness which F. D. Jones could not understand, and at his request she has been transferred to C. H. Fairman's stable.
