MANAWATU MEETING

HAKIM IN EMPIRE HANDICAP (Special) PALMERSTON N., July 5. The Manawatu Racing Club’s extra winter meeting, which takes the place of the abandoned Wellington July fixture, will be opened at Awapuni tomorrow. The wepther during the week has been very cold but fine, and the track is in autumn condition. The forecast is for no rain before Sunday, so the going to-morrow should be first class. Scratchings to-day were: Abbey Pay for the Maiden Stakes at 2.10, and Cooraclare for the Stewards’ Handicap at 12.10. Unlikely runners to-morrow are Abbey Pay and Golden Acre, and a decision about High Morale will be delayed until the day. He was sore after working on Thursday, and was not worked this morning. He is ati acceptor for the County Hurdles, and after his Hawke's Bay form was expected to race well. A division will not be necessary in the Maiden Stakes, and two more scratchings are required in the Stewards’ Handicap to avoid a division. Nine horses have more than one engagement. Peach King is to run in the County Hurdles, Irish Fox in the County Hurdles, Hunto in the Steeplechase, and Gynee Lou in the Suburban Handicap. Betting will be win and place, and the following will be well supported:— 10.45: Victory Hurdles. —First King. Matapan, Norse. 11.30: Maiden Stakes. Nanaaki. Homespun, Morotai. 12.15: Metropolitan Steeplechase.— The Dozer, Indian Sign, Kilmanagh. 1.5: Empire Handicap. Hakim, United Nations, Imperial. 1.50: Suburban Handicap. Moutoa Lord, Blackwater, Persuade. 2.3s.—County Handicap.—Blue Title, Lunaria, The Monarch.
