PLAN FOR COTTON
SIR STAFFORD CRIPPS GIVES A LEAD The importance of expanding the United Kingdom cotton industry has been emphasised by the revelation that supplies will be 2,000,000,000 yards a year short of the bare minimum of world requirements. Britain, whose cotton exports have long been the largest in the world, must obviously play a leading part in meeting this shortage. The recent statement on the future of the industry in Britain by Sir Stafford Cripps, President of the Board of Trade in the new Government, has aroused immense interest, and also the approval of industry in the country as a whole. As was expected, the Government took the opportunity to make clear its attitude towards private enterprise. Sir Stafford said the Government would not nationalise the cotton industry. On the contrary, it was prepared to give' it the maximum assistance to reach prosperity, provided the cotton industry itself did all in its power to reorganise its manufacturing systems and to establish improved working conditions for the operatives.
