HAILED AS STAR TENOR
QUEENSLAND FISHERMAN LONG JOURNEY FOR LESSONS (OC.) SYDNEY, Sept 25. A 24-year-old Queensland fisherman, Phillip Massoud, has been hailed as the finest natural tenor yet produced by Australia. Massoud, the son of Assyrian fisherfolk, lives at his birth-place, Tewantin, 200 miles from Brisbane. Once a week he travels from home to Brisbane for singing lessons from Miss Ruby Dent, well-known Brisbane musician. Massoud practises singing up to five hours every day, some of the time while he is engaged at his occupation. Massoud was advised to take up singing by Miss Marjorie Lawrence during her Australian tour. She was struck by the unusual qualities of his untrained voice when she was in Brisbane last year. Massoud hopes to give a recital in Sydney shortly. Interested mainly in operatic work, he plans to go abroad after a year’s further training.
