STARVATION LEVEL

CONDITIONS IN WEST GERMANY THOUSANDS IN CUSTODY WASHINGTON. (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) Sept. 29. The War Department has released a report dated August 20 from General Eisenhower on the American zone, stating that about 80,000 persons were being held under mandatory arrest in connection with de-Nazification. Another 35.000 war prisoners would be added to them. About 70,000 ardent Nazis, not subject to mandatory arrest, have been removed from public offices. The demilitarisation of Germany was proceeding rapidly. Considerable political activity is expected in future months. Most of the organisations proposed have been Leftist. The food situation in West Germany is perhaps the most serious problem. The average consumption is one-third below the daily subsisence level of 2000 calories. Black markets are not developing significantly, but inflation is growing.
