MASS MIGRATIONS
PROCESSIONS ACROSS VISTULA MILLIONS OF POLES ON MOVE LONDON, Sept. 28. Poland is undergoing one of the greatest migrations of people in her long history with traffic moving in both directions across the “Bridge of Sighs” spanning the Vistula gateway to the east and west, reports the Associated Press correspondent at Praga. The Russian-controlled temporary wooden structure, which is alongside the pontoon bridge, is the scene of one of the great exoduses the world has ever seen. There is a steady stream eastwards of men, women, and children carrying all their worldy possessions strapped on their backs, in bags, suitcases, and sacks. The Russians say they are repatriated exprisoners of war or civilians from former German territory. Simultaneously there is a westward move of more thousands. These Poles are headed for devastated Warsaw, where they will await whatever transport is available to carry them to Silesia to resettle Poland’s new territory. Polish Government circles say at least 2.000,000 Poles are still outside their homeland.
