POLICE FORCE PAY
SALARY SCALE INADEQUATE SUBMISSION IN HOUSE (F.0.P.R.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 25. Further consideration of the salaries of officers in the police force was urged by Mr R. M. Algie (Oppn., Remuera) during the discussion in the House of Representatives to-day of the annual report of the Police Department.
Mr Algie said it was conceded tha! this country had a first-class police force, but the monetary reward seemed out of proportion to the service rendered. He noted from recent newspaper correspondence that a member of the force was expected to work for 20 years in order to achieve a salary that represented an increase over his commencing salary of £65. The Prime Minister, Mr P. Fraser, said the salaries paid compared more than favourably with those of any country in the world. Mr Algie: That is not the point I am making. Mr Fraser agreed that the objective should be to make the reward measure up to the service rendered. He would look into the matter and present figures to the House at a later date.
