Nominations and forfeits for the Ashburton spring meeting are due on Monday, September 3. Macedoine has not raced since the Wellington spring meeting in October. She has been in work throughout the winter. All going well, the crack colt Magnificent, which won the Hobartville Stakes, is booked to run in the Victoria Derby, the A.J.C. Derby and the Melbourne Cup. The programme for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting is in circulation, and as nominations do not close until September 20, owners will have plenty of time to consider a campaign for the fixture. The fticcarton trainer, F. A. Roberts, has three horses in work for the McLean Stakes. Full Moon is a grey colt by Nizami from Aurora Borealis, Cloud Song is a black filly by Christopher Robin—Evasion, and Palomino is a chestnut filly by Solicitor General —Charmeuse.
Early Speed In the two-year-old parade held at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting, those that strode out in pleasing style were Beau Le Havre, Supervision and Pahiwau. Beau Le Havre was got by Beau Repalre—Pretty Brown, an imported mare by Tommy Atkins (son of Spion Kop) frbm Cleolia. Supervision was got by Revelation —Ithaca, by Lysander—Leta, by Ayr Laddie. Pahiwau was got by Bulandshar—Killara, by Arausio—Hoy, by Birkenhead. A Successful Mare
Francolin was retired from racing 1 owing to her fractiousness at the post. : In her last race at Wingatui her owner, 1 the late Mr R. M. Greenslade, heard some very uncomplimentary remarks about the behaviour of his mare and promptly decided to retire- her from the turf. Francolin has a twisted fetlock, but none of her stock have re--2 produced the malformation. Her stock i nave won £12,777 in stakes. Her first foal, Night Wings, was raced by Mr > J. A. Smaill and won £2242 in stakes.
; Tempting Offers The Riccarton stable of R. Wilson has the custody of two highly-valued » horses, Pensacola apd Beau Cheval. A [ few weeks ago an offer of 2000gns was . made from Sydney for Pensacola, but this was declined, and the negotiations , ceased. The owner of Beau Cheval i was recently asked to put a price on t the colt, but replied that he was not I for sale. He then received a cablets gram from Sydney offering him 2500gns, but this offer was rejected. , Pensacola has since developed signs of > lameness.
r A Good Sign ’ A pleasing feature of the 1945-46 ' season is the liberal nominations for ! classic events. This suggests an ad--1 vance in the breeding of stock deemed capable of racing in the best company that can be produced. There is every i reason to expect an improvement in l quality because New Zealand has never been so well supplied with high- ' class stallions as at the present time, and the importation of more mares would still further improve the position. The Stud Book and the Turf ! Register prove that representatives of our oldest taproots can produce highclass racehorses when bred to the best available sires. The prices paid at the annual yearling sales provide substantial proof that studmasters are working on progressive lines, and recognition of this fact is reflected in the increased value of New Zealand-bred bloodstock. Ashburton Racing Club Nominations for all events at the spring meeting close with the secretary, Ashburton, on Monday, September 3, at 8 p.m. Final forfeits for the John Grigg Stakes are due at the same hour. —Advt.
