E-BOATS SCATTERED

SORTIE ACROSS NORTH-SEA RUGBY, Mar. 18. E-boat formations which last night ventured across the North Sea in considerable numbers were scattered byRoyal Navy coastal forces and R.A.t. Coastal Command aircraft in action in defence of our convoy routes. Patrolling Wellingtons sighted various groups of E-boats shortly after dark, and shadowed them across the North Sea, constantly reporting back to base their positions, course, and speed. Consequently the enemy found a naval force awaiting his arrival, and when the E-boats turned about and hurried to their lairs along the Dutch coast, “strike” forces of Wellingtons from British bases and naval Swordfish from a Coastal Command base in Belgium were lying in ambush. In all 13 individual bombing attacks were made. The night was dark with considerable cloud. This made it difficult to assess results, but at least three cases or orange or red flashes were seen following an attack. All our aircraft returned.
