HIGHER WAGES

EFFECT ON PRICES REQUESTS FOR INCREASES EXPECTED (P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Mar. 19. The opinion that the Arbitration Court in its pronouncement on wages appeared to be guided by the findings of the Committee of Inquiry into the wages of railwaymen was expressed to-day by Mr W. J. Mount joy, secretary of the Wellington Employers’ Association. Mr Mountjoy was one of the three representatives of the employers who gave evidence before the court recently. “Just where all these increases in wages will end is difficult to foresee,” said Mr Mountjoy. “With the additional wages costs there must necessarily be requests for increases in the prices of commodities. The past policy of the Price Tribunal has in effect caused the retailers and others to carry extra costs, but there is a limit to the burden which business people can carry. It appears that as a result of the higher wage rates there may be increases in the cost of living. Business people and manufacturers should have the same right of consideration as is accorded other sections of the community.”
