BUSINESS INITIATIVE

STIFLED BY CONTROL STRONG PLEA FOR RELAXATION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 19. Speedy relaxation of controls affecting employment and material, and an easing of the burden of taxation as soon as the war is ended, were urged by Mr Percy Coyle, in his presidential address at the annual meeting of the Wellington Employers’ Association today. This would be the main ingredient, he said, of New Zealand’s success in post-war competition. The controls necessary in war time had the effect of stifling initiative, Mr Coyle said. With the end of the war in sight there should be a general desire by ’ progressive people to look ahead and cherish all that peace should bring—freedom to the workers to accept work according to their personal desires, freedom to the employers to obtain materials and to manufacture goods for the people, and to enter into competition in order to demand recognition for the quality of their respective wares.
