GALLANT SERVICE

TWO WARRANT OFFICERS DECORATED BOTH REPATRIATED PRISONERS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 19. Advice that his Majesty the King has approved the following awards, “in recognition of their gallant and distinguished services in the field,” has been received by the Minister of Defence, Mr F. Jones:— M.B.E. (Member of the Order of the British Empire) Warrant-officer (II) Herbert Sherwood King; wife, Mrs A. B. King, Auckland. Mentioned in Despatches Warrant-officer (II) William Peter Notley; wife, Mrs L. Notley, Auckland. Both men, who were serving with medical units, were captured by the enemy in Crete in May, 1941. They were repatriated to Egypt in November, 1943, and are now back in New Zealand. Both left for the Middle East with the first echelon in January, 1940. Warrant-officer King, who is aged 31, was before the war a chemist in Auckland. Warrant-officer Notley was a male nurse in the employ of the Auckland Hospital Board.
