A drowning accident occurred in Wellington Harbour to-night when a member of the crew of an overseas ship fell into the water. He was David Gillespie, quartermaster on the vessel. Gillespie was walking up the gangway when he slipped and. fell into the water under the" wharf. A crowd assembled and saw him struggling in the water. An officer of the ship, hearing the noise of the crowd, came on deck. He saw the man's plight, and immediately dived to his assistance. He held him till a ladder was lowered from the wharf. Artificial- respiration was applied for over an Dour without success.

It is understood that the man was in the water for a considerable time before the crowd realised the seriousness of his position. A few days ago another member ot the crew of the same ship fell 60 feet from a lifeboat that he was painting on to the wharf and was killed.
