SENTENCED TO DEATH
FIVE BRITISH WAR PRISONERS GERMAN REPORT FROM ITALY (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) LONDON. Feb 8. The German News Agency stated that the Italian police have captured and sentenced to death five or six British prisoners of war who had escaped to the Piedmontese Alps at the time that Marshal Badoglio signed the armistice and who had been a menace to the population. The Evening Standard points out that no prisoner who escapes or attempts to escape can be sentenced to death purely on that charge, but if the men committed acts of sabotage or used their freedom to engage in espionage their captors might be entitled to take strong action. The British Government has drawn the attention of its protecting Power to the fact that men as prisoners of war are entitled to all the privileges of protection conferred on such prisoners, and has asked for confirmation of the report and for full particulars with the least possible delay.
