CIVILIAN CLOTHING NEEDS
BETTER PROSPECTS FOR 1944 "According to a survey conducted by the New Zealand Garment Manufacturers Federation there is every prospect that essential civilian clothing requirements will be met to a greater extent in 1944 than is possible at present, states the_ New Zealand National Review. According to a report presented to the manufacturers’ conference, there is more than sufficient plant in New Zealand to carry out the programme for 1944. “In addition, there is encouraging evidence that, with increased quotas from overseas and expected increased supplies of civilian clothes from New Zealand mills next year, available materials, with certain serious exceptions, would be a lesser problem than the problem of man-power. »The federation had made a series of recommendations to the Minister of Supply concerning this vexed question of man-power (or, in this case, womanpower), including among which is the suggestion that some girls be recalled from the services, and the cessation of recruiting for women’s branches of the services. The whole plan is directed at fulfilling only what is regarded as essential programmes of production for the armed forces and the public next year.”
