OTAGO HARBOUR BOARD
RECLAIMED LANDS INSPECTED
The chairman and members of the Otago Harbour Board, in company with Mr H. McDowell Smith, architect for the buildings visited, recently made a visit of inspection to the reclaimed land in the vicinity of Anzac avenue. Gratification was expressed by the members at the progress of the various activities on the board’s recently-leased lands, and the advantages attaching to sites having rail connection available were pointed out. The assembly yards at Pelichet Bay. comprising an area of some acres, were visited, as were the rehabilitation buildings in course of erection on the board’s land fronting Anzac avenue. This land has been leased on generous terms to the Government for the rehabilitation of returned servicemen. The party also visited the large wool store being erected for,the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company in Parry street. This building covers an area of 32,000 square feet, and is being constructed on modern lines. The visit concluded with a call at the linseed oil factory erected by Dominion Industries, Ltd. The party was entertained at afternoon tea, and afterwards was conducted through the factory, where Ihe various processes were inspected. It was stated that 70 per cent, of the output was being used in connection with war work and that the exports to the North Island since April last had averaged 5000 gallons of linseed oil and 50 tons of linseed cake, etc., a week. A substantial amount was also being used in the South Island. Production had been proceeding steadily, and the factory had had an exceptionally smooth run from the outset.
