NURSING SERVICE RECEPTIONS

The arrival of American nurses in the Middle East was the occasion of many parties and “at homes.” Mrs R. G. Casey, wife of the British Minister of State, gave a 5 to 7 party at her flat in Cairo and invited representatives of the nursing services Lady Freyberg and Miss E. M. Nutsey, matron-in-chief, 2nd N.Z.E.F., were among the invited guests. A return party was given by the matron fcalled chief nurse) of the American 38th General Hospital. New Zealand nurses were, with the others present, shown over the hospital. They noted the cosilyheated hutments or wards, with water laid on to glass filters and with the paper cups provided for drinking. Convalescent patients were resplendent in plum-coloured dressing gowns of corduroy velveteen, with a monogram, “ U.5.A.,” worked on the pockets. The sisters’ mess was beautifully furnished. A large log fire and standard flags lent a cheerful atmosphere to the lounge. •' All food was served in cafeteria Style. Sleeping quarters were hutments of 10 single rooms each opening on to a wide veranda and a shower room was supplied for every two rooms.
