RACING NEWS

By Sentinel

Nominations are due to-day for the Great Northern meeting. Burberry met with trouble at the start of the Russley Handicap and his rider lost a stirrup iroji. The Joker is the ruling favourite for the Great Autumn, with Royal Lancer and Macedoine next in demand. The Cricket Bat gelding Ranji, who won so well at the Wingatui summer meeting, had a bad run in his race on the first day at Riccarton. Hurry Home was considered a bit short of work when she ran on the first day at Riccarton, and the race may improve her. Tea for Two was in. a bad way after racing at Riverton and could not put one of her legs to the ground. She collapsed at the home turn after being one of the leaders up to that stage of the race. Both Prudentla and Qui Tam were making their first appearance when they won on the first day at Riccarton. Some horses do not require to be raced into condition or treated to a race or two for experience. Gordon Richards has succeeded in equalling Archer’s record of riding 2749 winners. It is a futile comparison, because in Archer’s day the facilities for travelling were very different from those of recent years. It is an open question who ranks as the better horseman. Silver Sox was a long way back at one stage of his race on the first day at Riccarton and had to put in a good run to gain a place. He was got by Salmagundi —Silver Sail, by Paper Money—Tea Kettle, by Tea Tray—Nuit, by Absurd—Afterglow, by Demosthenes —Sunglow, a halfsister to Martian and a full sister to Boniform. Silver Sox has % good inheritance of stamina. Donnybrook Fair has always been able to gallop well on the track, but is apt to run out at the home turn, and this fault has cost him a race or two. At Riccarton he held the rails, and now that he can be taken the short route to the winning post he may win again. He won all the way in the Autumn Plate with 7.12 in lmin 38 3-ssec. In the Addington Handicap he meets Paladeo on 81b and Silver Sox on 111 b worse terms. Silver Sox meets Paladeo on 31b better terms for a neck beating. Amorlad has made a fairly rapid rise in the weights, as his two wins at Invercargill have sent him up 211 b. For his win in the Easter Handicap he meets Royal Chorus on 81b, Bashful Lady on 101 b, Spanish Lad on 111 b, and Doubleack on 121 b worse terms in the Awarua Handicap. Amorlad won in good style on the second day at Riverton, and in spite of the increase of poundage must be dangerous at Invercargill, particularly if the going is on the soft side. *7 The Joker won the Sockburn Handicap with 8.9 from Dominate (car. 7.7) and Kevin (car. 7.4 i). Palfrey 7.9 was fourth, and the unplaced lot included Arctic Dawn 8.13, The Raker 8.3, Military Maid 8.1, Eulogist 8.0, Sir Gundi 7.12, and St. Cloud 7.10. In the Great Autumn The Joker meets Dominate on 31b, Kevin on 31b (according to the weights carried), Palfrey on 51b, Arctic Down (fifth) on 121 b, The Raker on 51b, Military Maid, Eulogist, and Sir Gundi on 71b, and St. Cloud on 101 b worse terms. According to the figures Arctic Dawn looks the most dangerous of those he met.in the Sockburn.

Iceland Spar 7.5 won the Sockburn Handicap and Great Autumn with 7.4 in 1941. In 1940 Wild Talk 7:6 won the Sockburn, but did not start' in the Great Autumn, won by Willie Win. a non-starter on the first day. In 1939 Royal Chief 9.9 won the Sockburn, but was unplaced in the Great Autumn, won by Siegmund, a nonstarter on the first day. In 1938 Studley Royal 7.5 won the Sockburn and was second to Arctic King in the Great Autumn. Arctic King was fourth in the Sockburn. In 1937 Willie Win 8.1 won the SockbUrn and the Great Autumn with 7.13. In 1936 Might 8.11 won the Sock-1 burn and was unplaced in the Great, Autumn with 7.10. In 1935 Might 9.0 won the Sockburn and was unplaced in the Great Autumn with 8.5, won by Tauramai, who was unplaced in the Great Easter.
