THE COMMUNIST PARTY AND THE ELECTIONS
Sir,—Your correspondents J. B. and “ Matilda ” have both somewhat missed the point of the Communist Party s letter. The main point stressed by us was that general elections at this time were undesirable and should be called off Many columns would be required to'explain adequately the multitude of urgent reasons why New Zealand s best interests will be hindered by holding elections this year. The main reason, which we will continue to stress until the war against Fascism is won, is that it is absolutely essential that the people become more united in doing their main job, viz., vigorously working for the speedy and victorious conclusion of the W lt seems likely that the United Nations are in a much better position than ever before to intensify the offensive against the Axis, but there Is a need for a fuller understanding that we have much hard work and fighting to do before we win the victory. We need, too, a much keener sense of the urgency for carrying out all our tasks and contributing our full quota towards the war effort. We have done well, but who can deny that we can do still better? ... j We are firmly resolved that, in order to achieve our fullest and most rapid contribution to the war effort and the removal of all causes for the just complaints of both returned men and civilians, we must unite all our people upon the one aim of defeating the Axis Powers. We must remove the weaknesses in administrative bodies, strengthen the organisations of the people, and ensure the successful utilisation of the total resources of New Zealand. —We are, etc., Otago District Committee, Communist Party of New Zealand. lan Jamieson, Secretary.
