A SOCIOLOGIST’S NIGHTMARE
Sir,—l cannot share our Mr Allen’s sanguine pride that not a penny has been added to the rates. This Scotch city, which is so lcath to spend on any project, good or bad, which prides itself on carefully-balanced budgets, might do well to find a measuring stick other than the old financial one. We have money in the bank and that’s the lot, for thecity can boast but few facilities. Here in Dunedin we boast but ■ a few swimming baths, only two or three shoddy rest rooms for women, a smattering of kindergartens, only one day nursery for our 80,000 people. We may be an accountant’s dream; to the sociologist, we re a nightmare.—l am, etc., April 29. Bawbee Jock.
