LIGHTING RESTRICTIONS
VAGUE ANNOUNCEMENTS DISSATISFACTION IN AUCKLAND (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Dec. 16. E.P.S. block and district wardens, especially those whose areas face Waitemata Harbour and the Gulf, are very dissatisfied with the vague announcements made by the Minister of Civil Defence, Mr D. Wilson, regarding the relaxed lighting restrictions in advance of the full amended orders by the Dominion Lighting Controller. “For my part,” said one of them, “I have told all my team of wardens to cease night patrolling until further notice. Under conditions like these, with the old orders virtually wiped out and new orders not yet issued, it is practically useless to try to enforce any rules at all. What sense is there in telling people to shield their lights facing the harbour when apparently there is no need to pull down blinds over windows facing the other way? The only thing to do is to give up altogether for the time being.” In reply to a question, the Mayor and chief warden, Mr J. A. C. Allum, said he could not add anything to the Minister’s announcement that premises visible from the harbour and the sea required a “ brown-out ” only. That expression had been used in a telegram to him, and he had no authority to interpret it.
