SPORTING

THE C.J.C MEETING ROYAL LANCER IN FAVOUR A card of good fields will conclude the New Zealand Cup meeting to-morrow, and since, apart from the Canterbury Cup, the various events present an open aspect, some very good racing should be seen. Some of the fields are on the large side, and consequently the draw for position will be a matter of importance. Tire state of the going is another important factor that may contribute to the result, and possibly upset some of the form displayed on the first day. In the event of firm going, the following may be amongst those in favour:—

Noon; Suburban Handicap—Sir Gundi, Prince Shad, Siglow. 12.45; Canterbury Cup.—Kindergarten. 1.30: Seymour Handicap.—Bright Fox, Stourbridge, Vin d’Honneur. 2.15: Oaks Stakes.—Foxleap-Straight Bat bracket. Lady Spiral, Palora. 3; Pioneer Handicap; Royal Flight, Supercharge, Master Dash. 3.45: Metropolitan Handicap: Royal Lancer, Rakanui, Gayest Son. 4.30: Otaio Plate: Botany, Stairway, Macedoine. 5.15: Members’ Handicap.—Tutere, Lord Nuffield, Hearth.

RACING NEWS By Sentinel

The committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club has decided to run the totalisator itself at the forthcoming Cup and summer meetings, and improvements to the totalisator house will be carried out. A new number and jockeys’ board is also to be erected.

Last year Pay Roll won the Members’ Handicap with 7.73 in Imin 24 2-ssec, and can run again at the same weight this year. Actic Dawn, who is engaged in the Members’ Handicap, ran second to Southern Sail in the Dunedin Cup when carrying 141 b overweight. Kinsman, who is engaged in the Otaio Plate and Suburban Handicap, finished on in the New Zealand Cup, and has done well in high-weight handicaps in the North Island. Kinsman, Sir Gundi. Last Effort, Gay Lancer, Prince Shad, Hotch Potch, and Bright Fox hold two engagements on the concluding card for Riccarton. Palora, who shaped well in the Stewards’ Handicap, is reported to be a starter in the Oaks Stakes. She is also engaged in the Members’ Handicap. Eulogist made a quick forward move in the New Zealand Cup and was in charge at the home turn. He is not engaged in the Metropolitan Handicap, but figures in the Members’ Handicap. Last year he won the Criterion Handicap with 7.1 i in Imin 24 l-ssec. The field for the Pioneer Handicap is composed of runners in the Welcome Stakes and Spring Nursery. Royal Flight won the Welcome Stakes with 8.0 in 59 l-ssec, and First In won the Spring Nursery with 7.4 in 60sec when racing in heavy rain. Royal Flight has an extra 121 b and First In 101 b. Sea Spi meets Royal Flight on 51b better terms, and Supercharged, who met with interference, comes in on 101 b better terms. Soncy, who collided with Supercharged, comes in on 121 b better terms with the winner. A newcomer in Master Dash won well in 48sec at Napier Park. The order of favouritism may be Royal Flight, Supercharged, and Master Dash. Tutere will receive strong support for the Members’ Handicap. The opposition, however, represents better form than he has met up to date, Tutere won the Riccarton Handicap with 7.7 in Imin 51sec, or around Imin 25sec for seven furlongs. He won the Trial Stakes at Trentham in Imin 333 sec by two lengths, and on the same day Gayest Son 8.5 won the Pear.e Handicap in Imin 44Jsec. Tutere is improving and likely to train on to win in better company than he has met up to the present. In the Riccarton Handicap Gayest Son was not seen while attempting to give 311 b to Tutere, who put up a record. Gayest Son was meeting Tutere on 161 b better terms in the Members’ Handicap, but declined the task and is in the Metropolitan Handicap. Tutere has been rated fairly high at 31b better than Palora, who finished a good second in the Stewards’ Handicap. Nevertheless, he scored very comfortably on the first day, although as a rule horses do not have much in hand when putting up records. Lord Nuffield is a rather massive type of horse and hence can carry condition on his big frame. He was on the big side in condition when going out for the Stewards’ Handicap, and the race should improve him. The extra furlong of the Members’ Handicap is also in his favour. Lord Nuffield has now a substantial load that will require carrying in a fast-run race. Last season, with 9.13, Lord Nuffield got up to beat Scottish Dale 8.1 at Oamaru over six furlongs, and now meets her on lib worse terms. On form in the Stewards’ Handicap, Lord Nuffield meets Palora on 21b, Dinah Dhu on 31b, John Gay on 91b, Scottish Dale on 101 b, Hearth on 91b, Bashful Lady on 101 b, and The Champ on 111 b worse terms over an extra furlong. The above is the order as they ran past the post in the Stewards’ Handicap. It will be seen that Lord Nuffield is not harshly treated with the two nearest to him at. the finish of the Stewards’ Handicap, and he will be improved by the race. Bashful Lady's form was too bad to be true, and a week’s interval may make all the difference in the world to her. Scottish Dale may be improved by the race and Hearth will be better suited by the extra furlong, particularly if the going suits her. Newcomers are Tutere, Dominate, Arctic Dawn, Sing Sing, King Herod, Rawhamai, Shikari, and Sham Boy, who were not in the Stewards’ Handicap. Tutere will be selected as the best of them, and Dominate would be dangerous if back to the promise of his early form. The winner may come from Lord Nuffield, Tutere, Bashful Lady, Hearth, and Scottish Dale.

TROTTING NOTES By Sentinel

There is not a great deal of Foremost Junior, but he has a good turn of speed and stays well. He is on a 4min Slsec mark and should be capable of winning from there.

The Grattan Loyal horse Communique is an Improving sort who should race prominently at some of the forthcoming holiday meetings. First Degree takes the eye as one who is likely to develop into a good winner. A three-year-old filly by Quite Sure from Deste, she is owned by the Central Otago sportsman, Mr R. Lee, and is trained by P. Gallagher. Up to November 21 Mr B. Grice topped the list of winning owners with £3720. Haughty gathered £IBOO. Jack Potts has sired winners of £5045 this season, and will probably again head the list of winning sires for the season. Although Countless has some losing form as well as good wins, he is being rated as the “ best gelding since Harold Logan.” Countless is eligible for the front in the Ashburton Cup.
