VOLUNTARY AID CONCERT A successful and entertaining programme of musical and dramatic items was presented by the Red Cross Voluntary Aids in the Concert Chamber last night. The outstanding feature was undoubtedly the series of tableaux which depicted the manner in which the sick and wounded have been cared for from the time of Hygeia, in 1400 8.C., until the organisation of present-day voluntary aids. The cast included Misses Jessie McLennan, Olga Bezett, Joan Ritchie, Iris Cheyne, Nancy Alcock, Joan Roydhouse, Beatrice Jurv, Una Francis, Patricia Duncan, Phyllis Moore, Marie McCulloch, and Mrs Agnes Myles. The play, “ World without Men,” was presented by the transport detachment, the cast including Misses Isabel Wilson and Eleanor Carswell, Mrs Cecile Malthus (who was also the producer), and Misses Judith Gallaway, Margaret Ballard, Wyn Paterson, Joy Smith, and Spero Myles. A group from the orchestra of the King Edward Technical College, under the baton of Mr Frank Callaway, rendered the following items:— ’’Prelude ’’ (Vernon Griffiths), ’’Minuet” from Samson (Handel), “ Moto Perpetuo ” (Vernon Griffiths), "Marche Militaire ” (Schubert), and "A Ramble ’’ (Victor Galway). A choir of voluntary aids, conducted by Miss Meda Paine, sang the carols A Child This Day is Born,” ’’Furry Day Carol,” ’’ Good King Wenceslas, Holy Night.” "The First Noel,” "O Come, O Come, Emanuel,” and “Come All Ye Faithful.” , . , . Others who presented items during the evening were:—Miss Clara Rouse, songs. "Wonder” (Schubert) and “Sunday (Brahms); Mornington detachment the ballet, " The Return of the Swallow , Mrs Thora Trewern, songs. The Primrose Gown" (Michael Head) and The Piper” (Shamus O’Sullivan); Mrs Dorothy Scott, pianoforte solos, " The Little White Donkey” (Ibert) and “Musical Box (Pouishnoff); voluntary aid class, physical culture: and Centra! detachment, Gavotte, The accompaniments were played by Miss Mary G. Frazer and the orchestra.
