DESTRUCTIVE FIRE

OUTBREAK AT FREEZING WORKS (P.A.) BLENHEIM, Nov. 9. Serious damage was done by a fire which gutted the engine room of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company’s freezing works at Picton. It is not known what caused the outbreak, which made a spectacular sight until it was quelled by the town and works brigades, which did well to confine the blaze to one portion of the extensive buildings. The extent of the damage will not be known until a full survey has been made of the machinery, but it is possible that the meat in store may have to be removed, while the opening of seasonal operations is likely to be considerably delayed. Large gangs of men are working day and night clearing the debris in an effort to restore portions of the machinery to working order, Details of the insurances are not available.
