COST OF LIVING
SHARP INCREASE IN AUGUST
Figures given in the September issue of the Abstract of Statistics disclose that the all-groups price index for August showed a sharp increase on that for the previous month, the respective figures being 1124 and 1107. The base for this calculation is the price index for August, 1939, which is given as 1000. The seasonal increase in the prices of meat, potatoes and onions, although counter-balanced to some extent by further reductions in the prices of eggs and milk, caused an advance of 15 points in the retail food index. In addition, the clothing and miscellaneous groups advanced sharply, and the rent and fuel and light groups slightly. The total effect has been to advance the all-groups index for August by 17 points.
