CHAMPIONSHIP SPORTS

SECONDARY SCHOOLS MEETING THREE RECORDS BROKEN The sixteenth annual championship sports meeting of the Otago and Southland secondary schools was held at Carisbrook on Saturday. Except for a light shower in the morning, the conditions were favourable for the meeting, which was conducted by the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. The performances generally were of a high standard, the competition throughout was keen, and three records were broken and two equalled. An outstanding competitor was W. E. Mackintosh (Otago), who won four events in the intermediate division, in which he broke the existing long jump record of 18ft lUin by an inch, and established a new mark of 24 2-ssec for the 220 yards. His time, which was returned in a heat, was one-fifth of a second faster than the previous record. R. McDermott (Southland) won the three junior running events, and, with an exceptional performance of Usee, lowered the 100 yards record by one-fifth of a second. G. E. C. Clarke (Waitaki), who scored two wins in the senior section, equalled the 100 yards record of 10 3-ssec for the second time in consecutive years. The Waitaki Boys’ High School team, which won the 440 yards junior relay, equalled the existing record of 52sec.

Honours in the three divisions were well divided. Waitaki Boys’ High School won the Macassey Shield (senior), the runner-up being Otago Boys’ High School. The intermediate section was dominated by Otago Boys’ High School, which won the Oswald M. Smith Shield by a wide margin from Christian Brothers’ High School. The Arthur Barnett Shield (junior) was won by . Southland Boys’ High School, and here again Otago Boys’ High School was the runner-up. An attractive feature of the programme was the march past, in which all the competing schools took part.
