QUEEN CARNIVAL

OPENING FUNCTIONS TO-MORROW

The opening of the All People's All Purposes Queen Carnival to-morrow is being eagerly awaited. The four queen carnival candidates —Misses Mary Grant (Local Bodies and Building Trades), Jean Blackie (Manufacturing Industries), Beverley Brown (Transport), and Frances Holmes (Wholesale and Retail)— will make their first public appearance in a procession which will be held from the Railway Station to the Town Hall, via Lower Stuart street. Decorated floats, carrying the queens and their entourage, will be included in the procession, which will start at 12.30 p.m. Immediately afterwards the starters in the Sulky Stakes will line up near the Railway Station. The vehicles will be drawn by the following athletes: H. Nelson (Civil Service, who holds the New Zealand One, Two, and Three-mile junior records), G. Nelson (Civil Service), C. Greaney (Civil Service), C. A. Pope (St. Kilda), J. Collis (Mornington), J. L. W. Gerken (Civil Service), W. A. Hamblett (Mornington), J. Daly (Celtic United). L. R. McMillan (Civil Service), F. Pettit (Celtic United), and J. Sutherland (St. Kilda). Handicaps have been declared as follows: —R. S. Glendining 12 seconds, A. Bidgood 6, I. K. Mackay 4, D. G. McMillan 4, A. C. Cameron 2, J. W. Dove 2, W. G. Kindley scr. Sponsoring the Sulky Stakes are Messrs A. Ferguson, H. Bowie, B Parker, D. P. Wilson, A. Todd, and J. Trengrove. The Mosquito Derby, one of the most novel racing attractions conducted in Dunedin for years, will be held at 1.50. The jockeys will be: Misses June Mitchell, Joyce McGillan, Susan Fryer, Edna Anderson, Noel, Kerr, and Frew. At 1.10 the four queen carnival candidates will be presented to the public at the main entrance to the Town Hall. In conjunction with the carnival there is being conducted an art union, prizes for which are now on view at the H.B. in Princes street. Tickets are priced at 6d, and there are no fewer than 31 attractive prizes.
