FIRE EXTINGUISHER

DUNEDIN MAN’S INVENTION A new device much simpler In construction than the stirrup-pump or'the chemical fire extinguisher, the invention of a Dunedin man, was demonstrated yesterday at the Central Fire Station. The device consists of a single cylinder about the size and shape of a small ash can, with a length of hose attached to the bottom of it. Water run into the cylinder through the hose connected to any tap compresses the air inside the cylinder to a pressure equal to that in the water mains’. When the cylinder is full the pressure is retained by the closing of a valve in the hose close to where it Joins the cylinder. By releasing the valve as desired the water is forced out by the compressed air Inside the cylinder through a nozzle attached to the hose and a jet which retained its force for some time quickly dealt with a small fire.
