APPEALS FROM SERVICE
CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS FIGURES FOR THE DOMINION (F.0.P.R.) WELLINGTON. Feb. 5. According to a return presented in the House of Representatives to-day, appeals on conscientious grounds against service overseas and with the Territorial Force totalled 2643 for the Dominion up to July 31 last. The number of appeals determined was 1932, and those allowed totalled 243 Appeals against overseas service numbered 1630 by men drawn in the third, fourth, and seventh ballots, and territorial reservists who appealed totalled 1013. The boards dismissed 535 appeals outright, while 375 were dismissed subject to the appellants giving non-combatant service. Adjournments on other grounds, or pending further evidence, were made in 229 cases and 182 were adjourned owing to medical unfitness. The cases struck out because of permanent unfitness or for lack of prosecution reached 213, and 138 appeals were withdrawn. In the Dunedin and Invercargill districts 250 appeals were lodged, 187 -being against overseas service and 63 against territorial service. The Appeal Board determined 132 cases, and the decisions were as follows:—Dismissed outright 25, dismissed subject to non-combatant service 27, allowed 33, adjourned on other grounds, or pending further evidence, 21, adjourned owing to medical unfitness 7. struck out (permanently unfit) or dismissed for lack of prosecution 7, withdrawn 12.
