CENTRAL OTAGO

QUEENSTOWN A. and P. Society.—The annual meeting of the Lake County A. and P. Society was held in Arrowtown on Saturday night. There was a good attendance of members, and the president (Mr T. D. Scott) was in the chair. In his report to the members, the president stated that the society had offered its services to the Lake Zone Patriotic Committee in March, 1941. when a gymkhana organised by members realised the sum of £282. The balance sheet showed assets totalling £378 13s. The president referred to the death during the vear of Messrs T. Houston. William Reed. A. Buchanan. P. H. Tobin. and Mrs Johnston, and two judges, Messrs Cain and Prendergast. Votes of sympathy with the relatives were passed after mention had been made of Mr Tobin. who had acted as secretary for many years. Mr James McLean was elected president for the ensuing year, Mr D. R. Rowe was appointed vice-president, and Mr W. S. Reid re-elected treasurer. A strong executive was appointed. It was decided to write to Mr J. H. Douglas wishing him a speedy restoration to health. Thanks were expressed to the retiring president. It was decided not to hold the show next year, but to arrange a carnival in aid of DatHotic nurooses. Fire on Mountainside.—During the week a fire broke out in- the fern above the Queenstown-Head of Lake road in the vicinitv of the Five-mile. As it threatened the scenic reserve in the three-mile area, about 50 local people gave their services in fighting the blaze, which lasted throughout the day and well into the night. The fire extended over a threemile front and burned thousands of acres of tussock and fern. The bush in the reserve was not seriouslv damaged. New Bank Premises.—The staff of the Bank of New Zealand recently moved into handsome new two-storey premises in Rees street. In architectural design the new bank compares favourably with modern buildings in the cities. WANAKA The Weather.—There was an absence ot wind last week, and the days were beautifully fine and sunny. As there has been very little rain lately, the lake is exceptionally low for this time of the year. Swimming Club.—Dr Douglas was elected secretary of the Wanaka Swimming Club, and not Mr W. Manson as previously stated. Doctor's Club.—A »general committee meeting of the Wanaka District Doctor's Club was held recently. Proposals of a medical service were, received from the Government, and it was decided to enter into negotiations for the completion of an agreement. It was decided to write a letter of thanks to the Rev. Mr Cardno (Kaitangata) for his help to the club. The question of a water supply for the new building site was discussed, and a sub-committee was appointed to deal with this matter. It was decided to call tenders for the purchase of surplus fencing material that the club had on hand. The Upper Clutha Lodge requested a reduction in subscriptions for its soU dler members, and this request was agreed to. ' Lady Galway Guild.—The final meeting of the year for the Wanaka Lady Galway Guild was held last week, when a case of quilts and clothing was packed for despatch overseas. CLYDE Lawn Tennis.—The Clyde courts were offlciallv opened bv president (Mr J. R. ROss) on Saturday afternoon. A number of visitors from the Alexandra Club were present, the three courts being occupied all afternoon. Bowling.—The <-.fficial opening of the bowling season will take place on Saturday, October 18, on the Cromwell bowling green. Mr F. A. Laloli, of Roxburgh, president of the centre, will open the season. The green is in capital order. Matches in the country will be handicapped by the petrol restrictions, sufficient for 30 miles travelling being the limit Clubs like Wanaka and the Maniototo clubs will be severely curtailed in their trips. Euchre.—The weekly card tournament was again enjoyable, 50 players occupying the tables. The prizes went to Mrs J. L. Davidson first, Mrs W. K. George second, and to Mr L. Fountain first and Mr W. Dackers second. Next week special items will.be contributed at the community sing, and supper provided.

Personai.—Mr S. Heenan, of the local telephone exchange, has been transferred to Waipahi. Fruitgrowers' Meeting.—Mr J. R. Ross presided at the. monthly meeting of the Clyde Fruitgrowers' Association. There was a fair number of growers present, including Mr R. S. Kinnaird, federation director and the orchard instructor. The latter growers to be on the alert for fire-blight, which caused considerable concern last ssason in places, and also codlin moth and aphis. The Vincent County Council voted a £2 for £1 subsidy up to £lO for birds' eggs in the three fruitgrowing ridings. The annual i-ftoort of the Fruitgrowers' Employers' Union, with the balance sheet, was read. Growers were urged to join the union.

CROMWELL The Home Guard.—The weekly parade of the Home Guard was held on Wednesday evening, when there was a fair attendance. The parade was held on the flat adjoining the Recreation Ground, and was under the command of Mr A. Bell. A night manoeuvre demonstrating defence and attack was carried out. At the conclusion of the parade the usual n.c.o. class, was held. Patriotic Committee.—A meeting of the local Patriotic Committee was held last week, the Mayor (Mr James C. Parcell) presiding. The secretary presented a financial statement which disclosed that to date the sum of £995 15s 7d had been collected for the various funds. The matter of soldiers' parcels aroused some discussion, as a result of which it was left With the secretary to write to the Provincial Council making certain suggestions which it was considered would be more satisfactory. It was decided to hold the next meeting on November 3. Cricket Club.—At the annual meeting of the Cricket Club held recently there was a fair attendance, Mr S. Rankin being in the chair. The president, reviewing the past season's activities, referred particularly to members who had gone overseas. The financial statement showed that the season had closed with a slight credit. Angling.—ln .spite of the fact that the fishing season locally opened under somewhat adverse conditions, anglers have been meeting with fair success. Last week a local angler, fishing on the Clutha, secured a good basket of six, the heaviest of which turned the scale at 3Jlb, whilst a visiting angler also secured some good bags, ranging in weight up. to 41b. The fish were in excellent condition. OUTRAM Patriotic Committee.—At a recent meeting of the Patriotic Committee the secretary reported that £94 14s had been collected for the air raid distress appeal, and that the Bov Scouts had collected £SO 14s 6d for the Christmas parcels appeal He added that the women of the district had also sent away 34 parcels to ths men and one nurse from this district. Personal.—Warrant-officer W. Marshal! has s returned from his training and has taken up duty in the Dunedin centre, working in a district extending from wa,kouaiti to Middlemarch and Balclutha. Home Guard.—At recent meetings of the local Home Guard rifle shooting has been held at the range on the ' Downs propertv. The officers and n.c.o. s will meet Warrant-officer Marshall this week to discuss further training. Mounted Rifles.—The local mounted rifles commenced their mounted parades this week. They met at Mr J. Blair s and carried out drill and compass work. St. John Ambulance.—The Outram Nursing Division held its annual re-examina-tion recently. Dr Wylie and Mesdames A. Bathgate and Colhoun were the examiners. All members passed and qualified for a label. At the remaining meetings to be held this year lectures will be given by Dr Wylie on various subjects.
