EARLY SETTLERS

MEETING OF ASSOCIATION The monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago Early Settlers' Association was held yesterday afternoon, there being present the president (Mr W. J. Strong), in the chair, and Messrs W. H, Ferens, E. Webster, J. Dev, J. Hope, F. II Campbell. A, G. McKenzie, A, E. Selby. H. Baron, C, Morris, E. C. Tlazlett, A. F. Cheyne. R. T. Stewart, F, W. Knight, D. J Calder, J. F Eraser. W. R. Brugh, and VV. Paterson (secretary) A letter was received from the Trustees, Executors, and Agency Company advising that a legacy of £2OO had been left to the association by Mr W. F. Edmond. The following gifts were received, and votes of thanks were passed to the donors: —From Mrs J. Martin (Milton), framed portraits of her late parents, Mr and Mrs D E. Chisholm, and of her aunt and uncle, the late Mr and Mrs W. E. Chisholm (Stormcloud. 18C0), from Mr E. J. Wood (Balclutha), the original door of the first Balclutha Presbyterian Church over 80 years ago; from Mr F J Duncan (Dunedin), pigeon post, sent from Milford Sound to Dunedin, 1898. after the Union Steam Ship Company's s.s. Rotorua ran an excursion there; the pigeons were owned bv the late Mr J. R. Hayne; from Miss M. Murdoch (Timaru). framed porttrait of her late parents, Mr and Mrs John Murdoch (Pladda. 1860); from Mrs J. E. Wales (Roslyn), portraits of her late parents, Mr and Mrs Andrew Macfarlane (Aboukir, 1862); from Mr J. W. Riddoch (St Kilda). ink stand, from the captain's cabin of the Surat, which was wrecked near the Catlins River, December 31, 1873; from Mr John Battrick (Balclutha), collection of interesting relics, brought to New Zealand bv his grandmother, the late Mrs C. Tuck (William Mills, 1860); from G. E. Hammer (Dunedin), copy of ordinances of the Provincial Council, 1874; Mr D. C. Connor (Ravensbourne) presented a silver cup trophy won for rifle shooting; Mr R. G. Kilgour (Timaru), presented a

framed portrait of his father, the late David Kilgour, Seacliff (Viola. 1863; from Mr ,H. Guthrie (Ravensbourne), a token issued by B. Gittos, Auckland, 1864; from Miss Freeland (Morrinson's), copies of Auckland Weekly and Witness, 1925-29; from the estate of the late Mr F. P. Jago, framed portraits of his late parents, Mr and Mrs J. W. Jago (Cheviot, 1862): from Mr R. F. Inder (Wedderburn), wire strainer. Fulton's patent, made by Cutten. Dunedin.

The following deaths of early settleis were recorded during the month: —Miss J. R. Grieve, Otautau (s.s. Gothenburg, 1863); Robert Tempelton. Waikouaiti, aged 82 (1859); David M Melrose, Watpahi (1860); Mrs Margaret Johnstone. Port Chalmers, aged 100 (Lady Edigia, 1861); .Tames Bruce, Milton, aged 93 (Andrew Jackson. 1864). and Adam Edgar Tapanui, aged 91. One early settler was enrolled during the month. Mr A. Hanley, 22 Oban street, Roslyn (grandparents, 1860's): Mr R. G. Kilgour, Timaru (father, Viola, 1863); Mr C. Latham, Leckhampton court, Dunedin (father, 1863); and Miss M. Wilson, Invercargill (grandparents, Blundell, 1848).
