It has been the custom of the Gonville Sctfut Troops, Wanganui, to name its annual camo after some distinctive feature of the camp. For this reason the camp at the mouth of .the Kaitoki stream during the recent holidays was known as Camp: Waikiore because so many water-rats ■ were found in the vicinity. A camp/at Castlecliff a couple of years ago was known as " Makakaho," after the waving plumes of the toitoi. When the Scouts were camped at Mr G. F. A drive sent the jack vertically into the air, and one of the players, who was standing at the head caught it, responding, perhaps, to an impulse of cricketing days. Eye-witnesses were doubtful whether it would have come to rest in the rink and in play, but, anyhow, it had been touched, and a rule which applies when a jack has been burned, giving privileges to .the opposing side, had come into operation. A girl aged 18. Miss Ruby McKay, owes her life to the prompt and plucky action of her brother Leslie, aged 15, who jumped fully clothed into a river and supported his sister until assistance arrived, says a Gisborne report. Miss McKay fell from the railway bridge at the Willows into the Waiapaoa River. Knowing that she could not swim, her brother immediately jumped in after her and managed to hold her up until a boat was brought to the scene. '•••,"•!.■ A rare spectacle presented itself high up in the summer iky late recently one night in Christchurch, when the moon appeared perfectly balanced between two of the planets, probably Jupiter and Mars. Viewed away from the glare of the city in. the clear atmosphere above Sumner it commanded immediate attention. Through ordinary field glasses, the moon, just over half, looked like a dazzling silver bowl with a very uneven brim and with the larger planet below and to the left. So clear was. the air that the three adjacent constellations, Orion, Hyades, and Pleides, shone brilliantly through y .the. bright light, and six of "The Seven Sisters" were clearly visible to the naked eye. Spr,ead over a wide arc and including as it did some of the brightest and best-grouped stars in the Milky Way, this rare celestial picture was one to be remembered for a long time. ■ % ' Harvest needs for the farmer are now in stock at James Gray and Son's " Big Store," Milton. Forks, scythes, twine, 0i1... A bronzed plumber, of North Shore, Auckland, who has just returned from a country farm, says he is a very satisfied man with his pockets bulging with good new Reserve Bank notes. People are always saying what high wages plumbers earn at their trade, but he says that harvest work on the farm is a much better paid job, plus plenty of fresh air, and living like a lord all the time, meals being served nearly every two or three hours. They are called " snacks," but they are really meals. It is quite true long hours are worked and early rising is the rule, but there is no worry, no ladders to climb, and the harder one works the more satisfied the farmer is, as he sees his shapely stscks rising in a sunny atmosphere. The farmer was glad of his help, and he was never so well paid in his life. He is now looking for a farm, and when he buys one his plumbers' tools will be put away for good.
